Egypt's President Mohammed Mursi, enthroned himself as Pharoah, issuing a declaration banning challenges to his decrees, laws, and decisions! Mursi also sacked the chief prosecutor and ordered the retrial of people accused of attacking protesters when ex-President Mubarak held office. 


What is happening in Egypt right now is a transition from a dictatorship to another dictatorship. In transitions, they are inherently uncertain and you can't judge them on a minute-by-minute basis. You really have to take a kind of long view. http://venitism.blogspot.com

Mohammed ElBaradei says: Mursi today usurped all state powers and appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh. A major blow to the revolution that could have dire consequences. Egypt's political process is the stupidest transition in history.

Egypt now is not what the people died in Tahrir Square for. The economy is worsening, and the country's recent parliamentary election failed to produce a parliament reflective of the people's ambitions for a more liberal and pluralistic country. Instead, Egypt has an Islamist President and the new parliament is dominated by Islamists who include not only the Muslim Brotherhood but the terrorist Salafis. 

Most Egyptians are now alarmed by the extensive powers that Mursi has now granted himself. Mursi's decisions are final and cannot be contested. Protesteers have returned to the streets around Cairo's Tahrir Square. Egypt is missing political guidance. The new stupid declaration is likely to be hotly contested by the judges who will view it as an attack on the courts' independence. Mursi hoodwinks his decree is aimed at cleansing state institutions and destroying the infrastructure of the old regime.

We condemn the gender-based violence against women that is on the rise at all levels of Egyptian society. It began in 2005 with the government's systematic campaign of sexually assaulting and intimidating female activists and journalists. When the regime attacks women and holds no one accountable, it sends out a signal that women are fair game. When the street then attacks women and the police stands by and does nothing, that continues.

Islam is a dangerous ideology, not a religion. Islam fails four major tests that religions should fulfill: Adherence to a religion must be a personal choice; no religion should demand that those who leave it be killed; a religion must never mandate the subjugation of those who do not belong to it; a religion must be in accord with basic human rights. http://venitism.blogspot.com

A recent survey conducted by the Egyptian Center for Women's Rights showed that more than 80 percent of Egyptian women face sexual harassment, groping, and unwanted sexual attention. This is a problem the Egyptian people must not hide from.

Egyptian women are attacked by the regime, women are attacked by the street, women are attacked openly. There is something about gender-based violence in Egypt that is horrific. We have to look it in the eye and we must speak out about it, not just when it is the regime that is doing it to women, but when it's Egyptian men on the civilian level who are doing it to women.

Michael Scheuer points out all kleptocrats are wholehearted believers that the Arab Spring will bring the installation of secular democracy across that region. This has been and still is a nonsense that only adolescent idealists — or deliberate liars — could believe, and one that has been proven fatuous by the fact that Islamists have won every election held since the start of the Arab Spring. Kleptocrats will not admit they are wrong on this issue and they will pump billions of dollars and euros in foreign aid into the Arab-Spring countries in a feckless, Muslim-alienating effort to build secular democracies and install kleptocracy. Such aid not only will be wasted, but it surely will cause more Muslims take up arms against the West. Indeed, the continuation of this war on Islam is likely to start the clash of cultures.

Greeks, Turks, and Britons have influenced the culture of Middle East for many
centuries. Now there are many political transitions in the Middle East.
Everybody recognizes this is a pivotal moment in the Middle East and North
Africa. Hillary Clinton asserts the Arab Spring is an event comparable to the
fall of the Ottoman Empire or the decolonization of the Middle East following
the Second World War.

Historians will long be debating these momentous developments. The ability of
Occident to shape the events in the Middle East is limited. The time has come
for Arabs to start writing their own narratives. It might get ugly and end up
being not the kind of narrative that Westerners like. But it will still be their own narrative. 

The future of the Middle East will be written by its own people, not by any
foreign power. We should stand with those in the region who call for peaceful,
democratic transitions, for tolerance and pluralism. Western policy approach
should be both pragmatic and in keeping with Graecoroman principles, values, and
interests.

There is also a difference between the tolerant verses of the early period, when Muhammad was still powerless and under threat, and the hostile verses of the later period. Islam appeared one century after Muhammad's death. The first century of the Arab conquest shows the conquerors holding not to Islam but to Hagarism. Hagarenes claimed descent from Abraham through his slave wife Hagar, similarly to the Jews who claimed descent from Abraham through Sarah. The Muhammad of Islamic tradition did not exist! It was only in the eighth century, when the rulers of a now-vast Arabian empire felt the need for a unifying political theology, that they cobbled together the Islamic religion. The key figure in this enterprise was the brutal governor of Iraq, Hajjaj ibn Yusuf.
